Hazleton City Council "Power Shift"

New Council Members Vow to Work Together

HAZLETON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) Hazleton City council got a face lift Tuesday night.

Voters elected three new members and they vow to go beyond party lines to fix Hazleton’s woes. Our Lead I-Team Reporter Andy Mehalshick with the details.

This power shift includes the two newly elected republicans as well as the democrat elected to the city council. They insist it's time for a new beginning in the Mountain City.

"It doesn't matter if you're democrat or republican. “ So says Allison Barletta. The republican says she ran for the city council for only one reason. And it was not to engage in political game playing.

"We're just going to sit down as a team and move the city in a positive direction."

She is already putting that plan into action.

"I'm going to visit each department and see what improvements they need." Noted Barletta.

” I feel there is no democrat or republican."   Tony Colombo agrees.

Democrat Tony Colombo also won a seat on the Hazleton City Council. He has vowed to bring unity to city hall, especially at a time when the city is in a financial tailspin.

"We all have to be ourselves, be genuine and honest work together as a team and try to solve some of the problems that have been facing us." Said Colombo.

Barletta and Colombo told me they will not simply rubberstamp proposals offered up by the mayor but will work toward a better dialogue between the council and the mayor.

Voters ousted longtime democratic Councilmen Jack Mundie and Dave Sosar. Mundie's defeat ends a 16 year run on council.
