Halloween safety while trick-or-treating

SOUTH ABINGTON TOWNSHIP, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- Another reason to keep an eye on the roads Tuesday, kids across the area will be trick-or-treating in celebration of Halloween.

Every year, orange lights and costume frights come out for Halloween. But the scariest thing about this holiday may be the statistics.

"Unfortunately, this is the one night of the year where twice as many children will be hit by a car and killed, more than any night of the year," says James May at PennDOT.

So, how do you keep your kids safe on Halloween? Experts say trick-or-treaters should wear reflective tape and stay away from masks that block vision. For motorists- staying alert and focused is extremely important.

"No matter how many children you have in the car in their costumes, make sure they're buckled up so we can keep them safe," says Christina Sullivan, community traffic safety.

Kids may not be paying attention to cars when they're worried about one thing: candy.

One way to decrease the danger without sacrificing fun is by truck-or-treating. Summit Baptist Bible Church is holding one Tuesday evening.

"We have a well lit parking lot and some cross guards in case you need to cross the street, and of course we have candy," says Julie Mulligan.

The truck-or-treat lasts from 6:30 until 8:00 pm. The event is free and open to the public.
