An effort is underway in Scranton to make sure all kids living in the city's Hill Section have the ability to swim this summer at the Nay Aug Park pool.
It currently costs $5 a day to swim at the pool complex.
For some families, especially in tough economic times, that is a luxury that they just can't afford.
That's why the Scranton Hill Neighborhood Association is trying to help.
For many kids, they say the $5 fee is worth the price of admission.
"It's nice because I don't have a pool at home so I can just come here with my pool pass and I can just swim for the whole day," Keri Adolfson of Dickson City said.
While the pools in Scranton have only been open a few days, an effort to raise money to pay the entrance fee for some kids has been underway much longer.
"The children shouldn't have to pay for it. I know no better way to say it," Jonathan Samuel of Moosic said.
That's exactly what the Scranton Hill Neighborhood Association thinks.
They've already raised several thousand dollars to help defray the swimming cost for about 500 economically disadvantaged kids living in the Hill Section.
Nay Aug is their neighborhood pool and the only one that charges an entrance fee.
"The closest pool from here is Weston Field and it's impractical for a 12-year-old to walk two miles down and two miles back," Hill Section President Ozzie Quinn said.
Volunteer Doug Miller, who lives in West Scranton, has helped to organize a pasta dinner this Sunday to benefit the cause.
"That seems to be the type of event that can bring people together, especially on a Sunday, people enjoy pasta and I look at it as a way for people to come in and support a community-wide effort. This is everybody coming together," Miller said.
Instead of just buying day-passes for Hill Section kids, the neighborhood association is looking to buy season passes so that kids can enjoy the pool whenever they want.
Sunday's pasta dinner is planned for Sunday, June 29th from 12:00 PM - 6:00 PM at Villa Maria II at 1610 Washburn Street in West Scranton. Admission is $10.00.
