Program Reminder: They call it the house that love built!  On Sunday, Newsmakers will feature the Ronald McDonald House of Danville.

   Jayne Ann Bugda will have as her guests Renee Gerringer, Development Officer, Ginnetta Reed, Director of Communications and Development and Michael Turlis, Executive Director of the Ronald McDonald House of Danville.

   Each day the Ronald McDonald House welcomes the families of children who are hospitalized at the Janet Weis Children's Hospital at Geisinger Medical Center in Danville.  The panel will discuss the history of the Ronald McDonald House and the need for volunteers. They will also talk about the new Ronald McDonald Family Room located inside the Janet Weis Children's Hospital. 

   Newsmakers airs Sunday, January 14 at 6:30 am on WYOU and 11:30 am on WBRE.

 

 

The Greater Scranton Martin Luther King Commission (GSMLKC) will hold its annual celebration and community awards dinner at The University of Scranton, Sunday, Jan. 14. The theme of this year’s event, which will begin at 2:30 p.m. in the McIlhenny Ballroom of the DeNaples Center, is a “higher destiny” and focuses on raising awareness of the impact media portrayal has on the public’s beliefs about race, people, relationships and culture. Bayeté Ross Smith, a photographer, multi-media artist, filmmaker and educator from New York City, and Andy Mehalshick, an investigative reporter for WBRE Eyewitness News, Wilkes-Barre, will speak at the dinner.
The 2018 GSMLKC dinner theme is inspired by a quote from Dr. King: “Let us be those creative dissenters who will call our nation to A Higher Destiny. 

 

* Eyewitness News Education Reporter Crystal Cranmore will be the Mistress of Ceremony at the  first NAACP Wilkes-Barre Branch 2306 Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Breakfast. 

The event will be held at 9 a.m. Monday, January. 15, at Genetti’s Best Western, Wilkes-Barre. 

The keynote Speaker is Cassandra Coleman, Director of N.E. Region for Governor Tom Wolf.

Ronald Felton will be honored with the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Freedom Fighter Award.

The University of Scranton will host the 19th annual Northeast PA Brain Bee for high school students in grades 9 to 12 on Saturday, Feb. 3, beginning at 1 p.m. in the Loyola Science Center. The Brain Bee is offered free of charge, however, registration is required to participate
