Free Rent For First Responders

HUGHESTOWN, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- A fire department in Luzerne County has come up with a creative way to recruit new members.

Hughestown Hose Company is offering a live-in option for its first responders.

It all started about a decade ago when two firefighters went through some tough times and needed a place to stay.  Now the station has space for six live-in firefighters or EMT's.

In exchange for free room and board, the first responders must put in 40 hours per week at the department, receive the proper training, pass a background check, and meet other requirements.

"This is great because it helps us make sure we have qualified personnel here to help staff our station and get out to calls as our community expects us to do as quickly as possible," said Brandon Collins.

If you're interested in becoming a live-in member of the Hughestown Hose Company, you can contact the department to take a tour of the station.
