Fire company reopens after four years

MAHANOY CITY, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Rising from the ashes... A fire company burned down back in 2013... But its volunteers weren't ready to call it quits..

Flames destroyed Washington Hook and Ladder fire company in Mahanoy City back in August 2013. Like any fire call, its firefighters rushed to the scene, but their gear and equipment was ruined.

After four years, the fire company has a new home. They've built an addition on West End Fire and Rescue Company.

I asked a member how it feels to be reopening after this long journey...

"Do you want me to jump with joy," said Howell Davis, Washington Hook & Ladder No. 1.

For these dedicated firefighters, it's time to celebrate! And Washington Hook and Ladder Company is operational again with 11 active members. .

"We call ourselves the skeleton crew," said Howell Davis.

That crew invites the public to see what they've built. An open house is scheduled for Saturday.

"They've come back bigger and better and stronger than ever," said Chief Dan Markiewicz, Mahanoy City Fire Department.

While touring the new fire station -- you'll see state-of-the-art fire apparatus, gear and equipment. There's also some burned keepsakes. They saved what they could from the fire and those items are on display in the new building.

"After the fire, the guys and gals could have easily packed it up and said there's four other fire companies in Mahanoy City and left it at that -- but the determination and resolve, they wanted to move on and they stayed in service -- didn't miss a call that whole time of rebuilding and re-gearing," said Markiewicz.

It was later determined the fire that destroyed the original building was caused by an electrical problem. The grand re-opening party starts tomorrow at 11 a.m.
