Wilkes-Barre Township, Luzerne County -- It was supposed to start at 9 a.m. but job applicants began showing up early Monday for the first day of Gabe's hiring event at the Hilton Garden Inn in Wilkes-Barre Township. "We started interviewing about a quarter after eight because we had such a great turnout," said Gabe's representative Ronda English. Some of the early applicants seeking one of the roughly 150 jobs available hope the discount fashion retailer can provide them a better life for their families. "A little more pay, a little more hours... just to give a little more something for the family," said Rose Martin of Wilkes-Barre. Sean Carter of Hanover Township added, "I need a job. Simple as that, you know what I mean? Um, I need to provide for my kids."

That might be difficult for applicants who were counting on Gabe's for a shot at a family sustaining job. "Most of the jobs we're looking for will be part-time," said Ms. English. That means positions like customer service, cashier and stocking jobs will mostly provide 15 to 20 hours of weekly work opportunities at Gabe's. "(I'm) kind of surprised since it, like, just opened you'd think they'd be looking for full-time but I guess they're not," said Stardaisia Rivers of Wilkes-Barre. Despite that, the recent high school graduate says she'd settle for a part-time job. "Just work I guess to get experience and stuff."

Job applicant Lynn Volch of Swoyersville only wants a part-time position. When asked what that would mean for her to get that kind of job she replied, "It would be nice. You know it's hard to find a job that will fit into my schedule." Ms. Volch sympathizes with applicants who want more. "I feel bad for, you know, people that are looking for the benefits and everything like that."

Gabe's is currently converting the old Price Chopper in Wilkes-Barre Township's East End Center for its July 26th opening. While almost all of the jobs heading there are part-time, the company stresses that could change with business growth. "If you were to come in at part-time there is also full time that will also become an opportunity," said Ms. English.

The only full-time jobs available among the nearly 150 offered by Gabe's for its Wilkes-Barre Township site are five leadership positions. Gabe's hiring event was to wrap up Tuesday, June 24th,  from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Hilton Garden Inn in Wilkes-Barre Township.
