Delta Medix moves into Marketplace at Steamtown

Facility sees first patients Tuesday

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - There's a new tenant inside the Marketplace at Steamtown in Scranton but it's not your typical type of store.

A medical facility has now moved in.

Delta Medix began seeing its first patients Tuesday morning and other retailers in the facility are hoping to see a big benefit.

Delta Medix officials say having a medical facility in an area like an old mall is becoming more of a trend nationwide.

The Marketplace at Steamtown had just enough room for what the company needed so an idea first announced in 2016 has now become a reality.

For more than a year, the medical specialty group has been working to consolidate five of its facilities under one roof.

Doctor Susan Summerton believes it will provide a big boost for patient care.

"Finally all the doctors in my practice can come and meet with me and look at all the studies with me together, we can ask questions, discuss the patient cases," Dr. Susan Summerton said.

The new Delta Medix facility is located on the first floor of the Marketplace at Steamtown in an area last occupied by the old BonTon Department Store.

Instead of having patient families simply wait in a waiting room, the new location gives people options.

"My idea is to say to the husband who is waiting, why don't you go have a nice cup of coffee at Starbucks or why don't you stop in and have lunch at Basilico's," Dr. Kristine Kelley said.

With an estimated 50,000 patients expected to visit the medical facility each year, retailers throughout the Marketplace at Steamtown are excited about the ripple effect.

"I think we're going to get a lot more foot traffic in here. I think everybody is going to bring in business to us with food and wine!" Jessica Bono with Center City Wine Cellar said.

At the Scranton Public Market, shop owners say they already started seeing additional customers on Tuesday.

"Having all of these offices here will hopefully push people back this way to see who we are and what we have to offer!" Denise Gordon with Household 6 Creations said.

For Delta Medix patients, there was a little bit of confusion Tuesday.

Only one of the facility's offices have made the transition into the Marketplace at Steamtown so far.

The four others are expected to transition over during the month of April so if you have an appointment, it is best to check exactly what location you are supposed to visit.

The Delta Medix Center for Comprehensive Cancer Care, which is currently located on the Morgan Highway, is not expected to change its location.
