'Day of Literacy' For Head Start Students

Pocono Mountain West high schoolers organized this

TOBYHANNA, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - The cafeteria became a tropical jungle, and students transformed into exotic animals!

"It's really huge fun!" says four-year-old Aaliyah Jones, Head Start student.

Making music and playing games was part of Literacy Day at the Mountain Center in Tobyhanna.

"Today we show kids that reading can be so much fun!" says Lillian Nephin, Pocono Mountain West senior.

Pocono Mountain West high schoolers organized this day for Head Start students, ages three to five. It's been a tradition for years.

"I, I like this place!" smiles four-year-old Rajon Burgos, Head Start student.

The day starts with story time. A high schooler read 'Giraffe's Can't Dance' out loud.

"It was very nice, mhm," Jones adds.

Then the young students do activities related to the book, like pin the tale on the giraffe. They also created dancing giraffe artwork and ate animal crackers.

"I love it so much! The kids are just so joyful and happy and so adorable. It's honestly the best thing ever," says Ronald Curry, Pocono Mountain West senior.

Each year the Head Start students read a different book, and they're all going home with a copy.

"I like this because it's so fun!" Burgos smiles.

Different ages coming together for a lesson in literacy.

Traditionally, Literacy Day was held at Pocono Mountain West until two years ago, when Head Start moved into the Mountain Center.

Organizers say having this event at the Center is even better because there's more room for more kids to participate.
