Dave Fortunato, teacher and president of DAEA made the following announcement.
The 196 teachers represented by the Danville Area Education Association (DAEA) have announced they will go on strike effective Thursday, April 17.
DAEA President Dave Fortunato, a high school teacher in the Danville Area School District, said “the teachers felt they were forced into a strike after two years of unsuccessful bargaining.”
“No one likes teacher strikes,” said Fortunato. “Our teachers would rather be in their classrooms teaching their students. But we had no choice, when the Danville Area School Board rejected reasonable contract offers that were fair to educators, good for students, and affordable for taxpayers and a neutral state-fact-finder agreed with us .”
“Our teachers are deeply committed to the success of every child, but you can’t put children first, if you place teachers last,” Fortunato said. “This is a great school district and investing in our teachers is a must for our students. Teacher compensation is a school quality issue.”
The DAEA began the current round of bargaining with the Danville Area School Board two-years ago. During that time, the DAEA accepted an impartial state fact-finder’s report, which the school board voted to reject.
