Crews Investigate Chemical Leak at Offset Paperback Facility

(WBRE/WYOU-TV) An investigation is underway into what chemical leaked at Off-Set Paperback in Luzerne County on Tuesday.  A number of employees were taken to the hospital for treatment and the facility evacuated.  The I-Team’s Andy Mehalshick has the details.

"We worked an hour that's when the sirens started going off!" said Andrew Grasso, Offset employees.

And then employees say tensions began to rise...

Employees tell the I-team their supervisors said it was a gas leak then once we got outside they explained a little bit more. They didn't know what chemical it was they said you could have respiratory issues or you could get like a rash.

Other employees tell Eyewitness News they felt ill. A triage area was set up in the parking lot..

Medical personnel checked out employees....

11 workers  were sent to a hospital with non-life threatening injuries..

"It was pretty bizarre I expected to do my job and go home at three. But an hour later they say a chemical leak i was freaked out. They said if you weren't really near it they said you'd be okay. You have no respirator issues and i was okay with that." Said Jordan McDermot, Offset Paperback Employee.

"It was intense. Because actually we had full scale evacuation of the plant. Had to evacuate all employees of the plant..." said Deputy Chief Jay Wilkes of the Back Mountain Regional Fire Department.

As nearly 90 employees were being evacuated first responders  were entering  the building with protective gear...to search for the cause of the chemical leak.

"We had a release that caused an agent to go into the cooling system and that caused some irritant to be released to staff members." Said Chief Wilkes.
