Councilman resigns after probation sentence

Keith Transue of Mount Pocono is also a former police officer

UPDATE:  Mount Pocono Borough Council Member Keith Transue has resigned. The Council President read his letter of resignation during a council meeting on Monday, April 2nd. He was not present.

STROUDSBURG, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - It reads like a lifetime movie, but really unfolded right in the Poconos.

Robin Transue, 43, of Mount Pocono was sentenced Tuesday to spend 1 1/2 to 4 years behind bars for hiring a hit man to kill her police officer husband.

Months later he was charged, too.

Police learned that Keith Transue, 44, tried covering up an affair his wife had with a minor. The former officer was sentenced to probation.

Keith held several distinguished roles; a police officer, a school resource officer, and a borough councilman. Despite criminal charges, he still holds one of those positions.

Keith will still serve on borough council while serving probation.

According to Mount Pocono's mayor, even if council wanted to remove Transue, the solicitor says they don't have the ability to.

The mayor declined an interview with Eyewitness News, but Keith's defense attorney didn't.

"He's just trying to get his life back together again," explains Thomas Sundmaker, Keith Transue's defense attorney.

Police say Keith knew his wife, Robin, sexually assaulted a 14-year-old boy in 2010. Instead of reporting the abuse, he tried covering it up and had a talk with the victim.

"He never threatened the young man, just told him stay away from my wife," Sundmaker adds.

As a police officer, prosecutors say Keith was required to report abuse. According to his defense attorney, Keith has since resigned from the Bushkill Township Police Department in Northampton County.

"He's a very quiet, soft spoken man and unfortunately ended up in a sort of almost like a estranged made for TV movie," Sundmaker says.

Police say Keith held the crime over Robin's head. She felt trapped, and hired a hit man to murder him. That recruited hit man instead teamed up with police.

"This was an extremely difficult case for everyone involved. It ruined a family, so for everyone out there who is interested, love your husband, love your wife and never say anything you don't mean," says Gary Asteak, Robin Transue's defense attorney.

Robin Transue will serve her 1 1/2 to 4 year sentence in a state prison. The judge says a probation sentence for Keith Transue allows him to go home and care for the couple's four children.
