Community takes action after vandals hit Schuylkill County neighborhood

Neighbors blame kids who go out past curfew.

SHENANDOAH, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU)- Shattered windows, smashed cars, and graffiti covering the ground- that seems to be what kids are doing to keep busy this summer.

But neighbors in the borough have had it. People who live in Shenandoah tell Eyewitness News the vandalism is out of control.

They believe the vandalism is being done by kids who go out past curfew, and they're ready to put an end to it.

Eileen Burke lives across the street from Vine Street park in the town. She recalls what she saw this morning that made her call the police. Burke says she watched a boy throw a glass bottle in the air, smashing into pieces on the basketball courts.

She says it's not the first time she's seen kids vandalizing the neighborhood.

"They're anywhere from honest to god seven to 11 years old," says Burke.

Eyewitness News had a tough time finding appropriate images. Most of the graffiti is of the male anatomy, and contains expletives.

The vandals also broke into a garage and damaged two vehicles.

"Sad part is it's out of control," says Burke. "How you going to control them now?"

Community members are tired of seeing this happen in their town, so they're forming a community watch group.

Tammy Theriaque is leading the effort. She tells Eyewitness News the plan is to start patrolling the streets as a group.

"Give the police that extra eyeball," says Theriaque. "Extra set of hands."

Patrols will happen after curfew. Kids 18 and under have a curfew of 10:00 pm during the week and 11:00 on the weekends.

"What I'm basically trying to do is stop a bigger act of vandalism from happening," says Theriaque.

When we called the Shenandoah Police Department, officers did not have a comment on the situation.

That community watch group is still looking for people to join them to help deter the vandals.
