Cold Weather Brings Plumbing Problems

SNYDERSVILLE, MONROE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - It's starting to feel like winter. And with the cold weather comes plumbing problems, especially frozen pipes.

It's a homeowner's nightmare that keeps Leon Clapper's Plumbing and Heating business busy.

"You really have to worry about the winds and drafts getting on the pipes," says Leon Clapper, owner of Leon Clapper Plumbing, Heating & Water Conditioning.

Frozen pipes are especially common at vacation homes in the Poconos because many owners don't properly winterize their homes before leaving. Replacing or fixing the pipes is very expensive.

"If they freeze, they break, you thought a doctor or lawyer make money? Wait till you meet the plumber!" laughs Clapper.

Plumbers say one of the most important things you can do in this weather is remember to unhook your hose.

"If that's left on all winter, it will freeze and it will  break. Come spring, you will have flooded out the house and you're going to be very upset with yourself," Clapper adds.

Clapper is also Fire Chief of Blue Ridge Hook and Ladder. He's seen some homeowners try fixing plumbing problems on their own with blow torches and other flammable means.

He adds, "we've had houses burn down over the years"

He suggests sealing windows extra-tight, clearing leaves from vents, and keeping spaces properly insolated. Plumbing pipes in unheated areas such as attics and crawl spaces are most likely to freeze and burst.
