Danville, Montour County -- It was a proud reveal Sunday night for Janet Weis Children's Hospital Chairman of Pediatrics Michael Ryan when he announced that $1,772,379 was raised throughout northeastern and central Pennsylvania. The large sum came from corporate sponsors, various community groups and viewer phone pledges.
6-year-old Mikayla Horvath of Cresco, one of this year's Miracle Children, lent her voice to the cause during Celebration Weekend 2014 broadcast on WYOU. The Eyewitness News family and volunteers of all ages joined forces to solicit phone pledges. Those donations help fund vital equipment and other resources that benefit children treated at Geisinger for life-threatening injuries and illnesses.
Besides phone pledges, events like the Miracle Motorcycle Tour helped bring in much needed funds. So did the Miracle on Welles Street Car Show at the Geisinger Forty Fort Clinic. The funds raised throughout northeastern and central Pennsylvania combined with other fundraising efforts in Johnstown/Altoona and Binghamton, New York television markets made for a whopping, record-setting grand total of $2,781,829 which bested last year's previous record.
With nearly two-thirds of the nearly $2.8 million raised in northeastern and central Pennsylvania, it's reason for all of us to be proud. "It's always humbling to see the generosity of the people. We live in the greatest place in the state and the people here are always so, so helpful," said Geisinger Pediatric Hospitalist Dr. Paul Bellino.
The money raised this year will allow Geisinger to buy more equipment and provide services and programs for pediatrics. Don't forget to send in your pledge and help make miracles happen.
