Child Hospitalized with Gun Shot Wounds, Father in Jail

SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-TV) An 8-year-old gunshot victim is hospitalized and his father behind bars on a number of charges in Schuylkill County,

According to police the youngster arrived at Lehigh Valley Schuylkill East campus on Tuesday at with a gunshot wound to the left side of his body. 

Police say the boy's father, Nevin Ebener, said the firearm accidently went off when he picked it up. 

The shooting happened inside Ebener's apartment on the 200 block of East Market Street in Orwigsburg. 

In court papers, Ebener told police he and his son were "horsing around"  and goes on to say the youngster asked to see his dad's gun.

Ebener told police he retrieved his .45 caliber gun from a shelf in the kitchen, and placed it on a counter. 

Police say when Ebener picked up the gun, the gun discharged firing one round which struck his son on the left side of his body. 

 The boy was airlifted from Lehigh valley Schuylkill to Lehigh Valley Cedar Crest. 

The 8-year-old sustained life threatening injuries.

Upon investigation, police found more unsecured firearms, drugs and paraphernalia in the Orwigsburg apartment. 

Ebener is being held at Schuylkill County Prison.
