Charges to be filed in animal cruelty incident

Charges should be forthcoming -- that's the word from local animal shelter volunteers after a heartbreaking case of animal hoarding.

Nearly two dozen animals left in deplorable conditions are now in the care of the shelter.

Cruel conditions. That's how volunteers describe the living quarters of more than 20 pets living in a Scott Township home.

Jess Farrell, the interim executive director of Griffin Pond Animal Shelter said of the animals, "most of the dogs were living in kennels without food or water.  Some of the crates were actually just the wire bottoms that they were sitting on and a lot of the crates were rusty. Some of the dogs were trying to chew through the plastic kennels and it was just really a sad situation. Right away we could see that many of them were emaciated".

The animals were discovered Friday night after the Griffin Pond Animal Shelter humane officer served a warrant at the home. About two dozen dogs, a snake, a lizard, a ferret and a hedgehog -- which is illegal to own in the keystone state-- were rescued by shelter volunteers.

"we seem to have clear evidence of neglect and abuse and with the new libre law that has helped with animals in horrible situations get some justice" Farrell said.

With room to roam free, they are now recovering at the griffin pond animal shelter but still have a long road ahead to a clean bill of health

Shelter volunteers are asking for foster families to step up and help care for these animals. In the meantime, they are asking for cash donations and other donations like toys, towels and canned dog food. In cases of severe malnutrition however, canned pumpkin is a good donation to help get these dogs back to a healthy weight. Griffin Pond is hoping to put these pets up for adoption soon, giving them a new lease on life.
