Car Break-in Concerns

"Crime of Opportunity" rising

PITTSTON, LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- Many of us are filled with the holiday spirit but there's concern in one neighborhood somebody is out to spread some misery. It's why one man is sounding the alarm to his neighbors.

"I came out and found everything open and rummaged through," said Todd Thorne. It's about the last thing the Pittston man expected to see Tuesday night when he stepped out of his Mill Street home and approached his car. Someone rifled through the glove compartment and console. "Probably looking for money which I don't keep in the car anyway."

Mr. Thorne doesn't believe the intruder stole anything except his sense of security. "It kind of makes you kind of mad but scared for your family." Other neighbors say Mr. Thorne's car is the latest vehicle targeted in the city's Hill Section. "Yeah, it is a little close to home. Like I said earlier, there had been people trying to break into vehicles a couple of weeks ago," said Carlo Sagliocolo who lives at the rear of Mill Street

Police were unable to appear on camera but an officer on the phone told Eyewitness News he considers what happened to Mr. Thorne a crime of convenience. Their theory is based on the fact the car was unlocked to which Mr. Thorne explained "I had this setting out because I knew I had some running to do and it's easier just get in and go"

It's also easier for would-be thieves to get in and out of a car quickly without being caught. It's the type of crime that happens all too often this time of year as it gets dark earlier. From now on, Mr. Sagliocolo who owns a Jeep plans to reduce the temptation. "I usually keep my golf clubs and stuff in there and now I'm going to bring them in the house."

And something else to consider which Mr. Thorne has learned the hard way. "Everything should be locked up from now on. Everything's going to get locked up."

Pittston police say they will step up patrols in response to this latest incident.
