Business Leaders Hope to Lure Amazon's Second HQ to NEPA

LUZERNE COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU-tv)      Amazon we want you!. That's the message from economic development leaders from across Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania..
They are trying to lure the on-line retail giant to build it's second headquarters in our region.
Amazon is searching  North America for a location for it's newest headquarters..
The I-Team's Andy Mehalshick has more on the effort.

"In order to hit the grand slam you got to swing for the fences. If you don't try you have no opportunity." said John Augustine, CEO of Penn's Northeast on Thursday.
And that is the driving force behind a regional effort to convince amazon to locate its second headquarters somewhere in our region.,
John Augustine is C.E.O of Penn's Northeast, an agency who's specialty is economic development.
"What I think is unique is this is the first time that our region has come together as one. We're putting together a joint application showing the best of what Northeastern Pennsylvania has to offer." Added Augustine.

Amazon already has a presence in Northeastern Pennsylvania with two large distribution centers, one in Pittston Township and another in Hazleton..
Amazon says it will invest as much as $5 billion dollars  in construction in that second headquarters called "HQ2".
It  would create 50,000 high paying jobs.
.But the company has set some priorities  before even considering a region..including..

1. Metropolitan area of one million people
2. An efficient public transit system
3. An international airport nearby

Augustine admits it's a challenge but...
"We have about six locations that we are going to be including. We are working with Wilkes University graduate students who have come to the table to help put together a creative way to deliver this. We don't want to be just another piece of paper in the mail."

Larry Newman is Executive Director of the Diamond City Partnership, a Downtown Development group based in Wilkes-Barre. He says at the very least this effort---
"It provides us with a way for us not just to make a pitch to Amazon but to evaluate our region's strengths and weaknesses."

Groups from the Poconos and Central PA are also taking part in the pitch.
