Throop, Lackawanna County-  A former Lackawanna County church, left vacant since 2009 will soon have a new owner.
The Borough of  Throop is in the process of buying the former Catholic church.
A borough official tells Eyewitness News the purchase of the former St. John the Baptist Church on Sanderson Street is "a done deal."...pending some minor formalities.
The former parish of St John's was founded by Slovak Immigrants in 1905.
The Throop Community center is located right next door, and the borough official tells us that there are many options for the former Catholic church and rectory.
Also in Throop, Borough leaders are trying to get around the Scranton commuter tax.
Council members are checking into the legality of taxing Throop residents the state maximum 1-point-7-5 percent earned income tax, then reimbursing them.
They hope this would prevent Throop residents from having to pay Scranton's Commuter tax.
