Blue Mountain Elementary School Fundraises 30-Thousand Dollars

ORWIGSBURG, SCHUYLKILL COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- You won't be seeing any bake sales at this school. Instead, you'll find students running to raise money. This year, they've raised far more than they expected! Eyewitness News reporter Haley Bianco shows us how it's being used.

Children at school getting exercise - but it's not for gym class.  Instead it's part of the Blue Mountain Elementary School annual Boosterthon fundraiser.

This year, the program helped students raised more than 30-thousand dollars!

Here's how it works. Students find sponsors at home or in their community to pledge money for them to run laps. Even if they pledge one dollar a lap -- it adds up quickly! Fourth grader Jack Ghergehel ran 72 laps! And 3rd grader Blake Dottery's class earned 90 dollars per lap.

The school PTO distributes the money. 10-percent goes to the teachers -- to pay for class supplies and enhancements -- things they'd normally pay out of pocket for.  The rest -- goes back to the kids!

"Every child goes on a field trip, we completely pay for that, that's all through Boosterthon funds. We pay for fun day, teacher appreaciation day, talent shows, there's so many things we bring to the school that cost money," said Lisa March, PTO Chairperson.

The goal this year was to raise 25-thousand dollars and because the students went above and beyond, the principals had to hold up their end of the deal -- going indoor skydiving!

"the students came up with it. I felt it was worth the effort. And we're willing to do whatever to help the kids. That's why we're here," said Katie Hubiak, asst. principal.

"Iam so proud of everyone that helped us reach it," said Isabelle Fanelli, a 3rd grader.

And for every 30-dollars per lap earned in a classroom, the Boosterthon organization donated three meals to local food banks.
