Bloomsburg University Starts "Anchor Program"

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - Leaders at Bloomsburg University want to help children transitioning out of the state's foster care system attend college.

"Many of these young people don't see themselves as college bound. we can change that," said Dr. James Brown, the dean of the College of Liberal Arts.

The university started a new initiative called "The Anchor Program." It caters to children ages 15 to 18 in the foster care system, giving them a chance to explore their academic interests during a summer residential college life experience and year-round mentorship opportunities with current students.

"They may be coming from a situation where they are not told how smart they are, how beautiful they are. This is a crucial time when we want these things to be made known to them," said Rona Anderson, the program coordinator.

Ron Simon is the CEO of the Children Services Center in Wilkes-Barre. They serve more than 6,000 children, some of whom are placed in the foster care or adoption system. Simon says there is college education funding available for kids in the system but unfortunately some aren't aware of the opportunity or encouraged to apply. He says there is a need for the Anchor Program.

"Especially kids that are in foster care, they have experienced trauma and that's where I think anything extra we can do to help them is powerful," said Simon.

The Summer Anchor Program starts on July 15th and ends July 22nd. It is free of charge to students. There is an application process.
