Bloomsburg University adds new residence hall

BLOOMSBURG, COLUMBIA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - It was move-in day for students at Bloomsburg University Monday And for some of those returning to campus, it means having a much bigger living space and more amenities.

"i had three roommates in my room last Semester. So it's so nice having my own room. And it's a lot more spacious than I thought it would be," said sophomore Sarah D'Agostino.

She moved into the brand new, seven-story residence hall named for former university president, David Soltz. It's the first suite-style residence hall on campus. That means students can have their own room and share a common area and bathroom with up to three other people. It's a step up from the campus's seven traditional dormitories where up to *three* students were sometimes living in bedrooms meant for two.

"Our campus infrastructure did not keep pace with our enrollment, which led to tripling," said Dione Somerville, the vice president for student affairs at the university. She says the building became a top priority after the university conducted a facilities master plan in 2014. After 18 months of construction, the estimated $60 million building project wrapped up this summer with 138 suits and dedicated learning spaces for classwork. It's a multifunctional building with a 24/7 mailroom for and book store. But a big hit with the students is the new Qdoba and Chick-fil-A.Both are open to the community.

"We have stake and shake and subway but after being a freshman last year I'm excited to have Chick-fil-A and Qdoba," said Maddie Meyers, a sophomore.

School leaders say the this project is an accomplishment for the university and the community.

"We're able to add a building like this with multiple functions in it, including our housing, at a time when we know not everybody is able to do that," said Somerville.
