Beloved Boscov's Chairman Albert Boscov Passes Away

(WBRE/WYOU) - Jim Boscov, Ceo and Vice Chairman of Boscov's Department Store announced on Friday that Albert Boscov, chairman of the company died at the age of 87. Boscov's family announced just this week that he had terminal cancer.

Ninety Nine years ago, a man by the name of Solomon Boscov, a Jewish Russian immigrant took a risk. In 1918, he opened a dry goods store in a row home in Reading, Pennsylvania...a humble start for what would become a family empire.

Born September 22, 1929, Albert Boscov attended Penn State and Drexel University. By the 1950's Albert took over the family business...a business that had exploded and grown into the nation's largest family owned department store with more than 50 locations in Pennsylvania, Maryland, New York, New Jersey, Delaware and Virginia.

By 2006, Boscov had retired as chairman transferring control to his nephew but retirement didn't last long. A few years later, Albert came back....liftted the struggling chain out of bankruptcy and bought it back thanks to loans from several cities and the state.

Since then, he remained active in the company's day to day operations as chairman. He was so active that he worked Thanksgiving night in 2014 to show his employees that working on Turkey Day was a necessity to stay competitive in the retail industry.

A businessman and a philanthropist, Boscov donated money to Penn State Berks campus for its library and to a theater in Reading for restoration and other improvements. Boscov even took stage at that theatre...playing the part of the father in the musical "Fiddler on the Roof". Boscov died at the age of 87.

Below is the official release sent from the Boscov's PR Department:
