Bank robbery suspect shot and killed by police after chase

"Critical incident" spanned two counties

UPDATE:

Police say 40-year-old John Souder of Old Forge, PA is responsible for the the armed robbery and police chase that ended in gun fire.

OLD FORGE, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) - One man is dead after being shot-and-killed by police after a bank robbery and chase that spanned both Luzerne and Lackawanna Counties Thursday afternoon.

State police and local police have spent hours at the scene investigating exactly what happened.

Forensic crews are taking photographs and trying to piece together what happened.

At this point, investigators will only say multiple officers who are from both local and state police fired their weapons.

Those officers are currently on administrative leave as prosecutors in Lackawanna County try to determine whether the deadly shooting was justified.

Eyewitnesses were able to film some of the gunshots being fired as the police chase came to an end on South Main Street in Old Forge around 2:00 PM.

Brenden Wahl took some video as he just got out of his car at a convenience store.

"There was a PT Cruiser leading about 20 cars, 20 cops on a chase. Got out, heard gunshots, ran inside and that was it," Wahl said. When asked how many gunshots he heard, Wahl replied, "a good ten or 12!"

Police confirm this chase started as a bank robbery at the M&T Bank in Wyoming borough in Luzerne County.

Officers spotted the suspect trying to make his getaway and followed him.

When the chase ended roughly eight miles away in Old Forge, investigators say the man was armed with a gun.

At this point, Pennsylvania State Police have not said exactly how the chase came to an end. They have also not said if the suspect fired his weapon at all.

"I can tell you law enforcement fired. I can tell you we recovered a handgun outside the PT Cruiser but just due to the multitude of evidence that still has to be processed at the scene as well as video surveillance, MVR footage that needs to be reviewed which has only been preliminarily reviewed, I don't feel comfortable releasing that information at this time," Captain Chris Paris with the Pennsylvania State Police said.

The man who was shot was taken to Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton where he died. An autopsy is planned.

"I heard gunfire, at least 20 rounds and I'm like, holy heck, get down, everybody get down, lock the door. It was terrifying," eyewitness Ramona Lyckowski of Kingston said.

State police say they have recovered a grocery bag with money inside the suspect's vehicle which matches what the bank robber got away with from the heist in Luzerne County.

Besides the suspect who was killed, investigators say no one else was hurt.

Because there is a lot of evidence, interviews and information to go through, it is unknown how long the investigation will take.

State police are asking anyone with information or video of the chase/police shooting, to give the Pennsylvania State Police Dunmore barracks a call.
