Assessing the Damage in Pike County

PIKE COUNTY ( WBRE/WYOU-TV) It could be at least two more days before everyone in Pike and Monroe counties gets their power back.Crews have been working around the clock — but the amount of damage is staggering. Eyewitness News reporter Eric Deabill in Pike County with the details.

Hundreds of people here spent a third straight day in the dark.

Many are relying on generators, but even keeping them going is getting to be more difficult.

 

“It is frustrating just trying to get the norms, gas and everything, gas is starting to run out in places,” Said Amber Cookingham, of Lackawaxen Township.

PPL Electric Utilities says it has more than 1700 workers trying to get all the power back on.

John Badoud cheered when a crew from Alabama pulled up outside his house.

“They’re going to get me power back which is great! Some kind of civilization back! " noted John Badoud of Lackawaxen Township.

 Getting the lights back on is no easy task because accessibility is still even an issue.

Driving in many places is like an obstacle course with parts of roads still blocked by downed trees and wires.

Township officials say many people are choosing to stay in their homes so they’re checking on seniors as much as they can.

“We’ve gone in with four wheelers and UTV’s in the remote locations and bring some water and supplies and check on people” added Ziggy Donovan,  Lackawaxen Township Ambulance Supervisor

With so much damage almost everywhere you look, many now worry that there could potentially be more snow on the way mid-week.

“It looks like a Category 2 or Category 3 hurricane came through here. You add the snow factor on top of the storm and it really is something that we haven’t seen in a long time” said Dave Skutnik, of the American Red Cross

Red Cross officials given the number of shelters they’ve opened and a number of people without power — this is the agency’s largest response since Superstorm Sandy which was more than five years ago.
