7-year-old with cancer joins the Army

MOOSIC, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) -- A local kid turned seven last week. But today, his lifelong dream became a reality. And it all started when an Army tank picked him up at his house in Taylor.

A military escort from his house to the Moosic youth center, 7-year-old Brogan Perfilio had the ride of his life! When they arrived, soldiers were waiting -- at his command.

The 109-th infantry, the local national guard unit, heard Brogan's story. In October, his eyes started blinking out of sync,w hich led doctors to diagnose him with astrocytoma, a form of brain cancer.

"He's so special and he's such a good boy," said Brogan's grandmother.

"Since he could walk he's been like let me see that truck let me see that car, anything that has to do with the military or the army," said his sister.

I asked the birthday boy why he wants to be in the Army.

"Cause they help people," said Brogan.

Brogan's bravery was recognized by these soldiers -- by making him one of their own. Now, he's an honory member of the Pennsylvania National Guard and the United States Army.

"He lit up with joy," said his sister.

Reporter: Is this your favorite birthday ever?
Brogan: Yea!
Reporter: Why?
Brogan: Because the army's here!

"I can't even thank everyone enough for everything they've done. Because he'll never forget this," said his grandmother.

With that honorary military membership, Brogan's earned the honorary rank of sergeant. Those soldiers who attended his party today were there on a volunteer basis.

As for rogan's cancer, doctors say they don't know how long he's had it, telling his family he may have been born with it. Brogan has treatments every week at children's hospital of Philadelphia. His loved ones remain hopeful that he will heal.
