WILKES-BARRE, LUZERNE COUNTY -- We caught up with Genna Kundratic when she was making brownies for a co-worker in Scranton CMC's emergency room. This nurse is also a patient -- diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer this past November.
"I have the best oncologist in the world, Dr. Bruce Saidman, and he said, 'We'll get it,'" said Genna. "We kind of always knew it would come back."
That's right. This is the second time Genna's fighting the disease. She says people who develop Stage IV breast cancer usually have a recurrence within five years.
She was first diagnosed in April 2006, and it spread to her liver. Genna won that fight, and we caught up with her when the cancer was gone. She and her daughter, Julia, were preparing for a breast cancer fundraiser.
"December 2nd, that's my anniversary," Genna said to us in a 2007 interview.
"So, I was, as he would say, you're free of any measurable disease, which means cancer-free."
But December 2, 2009, Genna was starting chemotherapy again, after being diagnosed with Stage IV breast cancer for the second time. She's now in the middle of 20 weeks of oral chemotherapy -- seven days on, seven days off.
"There's minimal shrinkage, but any kind of decrease is good," Genna said.
Her friends and co-workers started a fund "Generosity for Genna." Since Genna can work only every other week, she can dip into the fund when needed -- to pay a bill, or even to buy her daughter a prom dress.
While many might say the fight is too tough, Genna is looking forward to her second win.
"In the end, you have to fight, I have a lot to live for, a lot of things to do," said Genna, "like living life, cancer-free."
And that's exactly what Genna's going to do, with the help of family and friends.
"My dad prays every single day, goes to church every single day," said Genna. "I just think that, I'm supposed to be here."
