David DeCosmo

David DeCosmo is a Hazleton
native who began his broadcasting career in radio. He first joined WYOU News in
a part time position while serving as News Director of WILK Radio in Wilkes-Barre. In 1972 he
served as Public Information Director for Luzerne County Civil Defense during
the Tropical Storm Agnes Flood and directed a network of 13 radio stations
established in the weeks following that disaster to provide emergency
information to the victims, their families, and the general public.
David joined WYOU News on a full time basis in 1980 and
served as Wilkes-Barre Bureau Chief until 1998 when he moved into WYOU News's
Scranton Newsroom. He has personally covered some of the biggest stories in
Northeastern Pennsylvania
including the Agnes Flood, the George Banks mass murders. the crash of TWA
Flight 800 with the loss of students and teachers from Montoursville and many
others.
He was the first reporter to break the story that
Giardiasis had contaminated water supplies in Northeastern Pennsylvania and is
credited with getting the Governor's Office to agree to release millions of
dollars it had with held from the city of Scranton when he reveled to Governor
Tom Ridge that much of the sanctioned money had been slated to be used for
public safety projects.
David served as a lay advisor to the Luzerne County Law
and Library (Bar) Association and was the first president of the Professional
News Media Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania. He served two terms as
President of the Pennsylvania Associated Press Broadcaster's Association and
served on that professional association's board of directors for over 30 years.
David has taught courses in Broadcast Management and News
writing at both Wilkes University and King's College in Wilkes-Barre. He has received numerous
professional, awards including the Lifetime Achievement Award from the
Professional News Media Association of Northeastern Pennsylvania.
