The 27th Annual Pocono Arts Council Youth in Music Excellence Awards were held on Saturday, March 1, in the Cohen Recital Hall on the campus of East Stroudsburg University.  At that time, students in grades three through twelve competed for cash awards.  Award sponsors included the Council, Pocono Choral Society, Beacon Hill Concerts & Dan & Sidnie Crawford, Monroe County Bar Association Foundation, Delaware Water Gap Celebration of the Arts, Harvey Feldman, and Northampton Community College-Monroe Campus. Thanks to these generous sponsors fifteen awards were available this year and a total of $1400 was distributed.  Forty students from throughout the county participated in the competition.  Evaluators for the day were Betsy Buzzelli-Clarke, chairperson of the Music Department at East Stroudsburg University, Christopher Souza, professional violinist, and Nancy Joy Koch, retired music educator and church organist.  Winners in the junior performance categories received a $50 cash award.  Winners in the senior, ensembles and jazz improvisation categories received a $100 cash award.
A $250 Instrumental Honor Award and $250 Vocal Honor Award were also available for a graduating senior.  This year’s awards went to Bergen Price, a senior from Pocono Mountain East High School.  Bergen was also the first recipient of a Suzanne Anderson Scholarship, recently established by the late Ms. Anderson to honor a graduating senior who is going on to study music in college.  Her award was presented at the recent Spring for the Arts Gala sponsored by the Pocono Arts Council.
