Leadership Lackawanna in association with Griffin Pond Animal Shelter, 967 Griffin Pond Rd., South Abington Township, raised $8,499.45 through multiple fundraisers and events during the last 10 months of the Leadership Lackawanna Core Program.  The donation will go toward supplies, care and medication for the foster program at Griffin Pond Animal Shelter. The funds were raised through a happy hour at the Backyard Alehouse, Gertrude Hawk candy sales and a baseball game at PNC Field.  The final event, Foster-A-Pet Family Fun Day, was located at South Abington Park and hosted more than 800 adults, children and pets.

Griffin Pond Animal Shelter launched a foster program in early 2012.  The shelter cares for nearly 6,000 animals a year, so the foster program is a necessary means of specialized care for sick, injured, newborn/nursing animals or animals with behavioral issues. The foster program is a key component in reducing the number of animals facing euthanasia at the shelter, through dedicated care from fosters and by making space available for other animals while keeping more animals off the streets of our community.
In the Leadership Lackawanna 10-month Core Program, participants gain relevant skills and enhanced understandings of the issues and topics relevant to the greater Scranton area.  Class members also participate in group projects benefiting local nonprofit organizations.  Established in 1982, Leadership Lackawanna’s three programs - teen, core and executive leadership – have graduated more than 1,400 community leaders.  For more information, visit
