Michael R. Gillespie, chief accounting officer for Hersha Hospitality Trust, has been named the Bloomsburg University of Pennsylvania Alumni Association’s Volunteer of the Year for 2014. A member of BU’s Class of 1995, Gillespie will be honored with the William T. Derricott ’66 Volunteer of the Year Award at a dinner on Friday, May 16, during Alumni Weekend 2014. The award is given to a graduate who enthusiastically supports the university’s mission and values through contributions of time and talent on behalf of the Alumni Association.

Gillespie serves on the Bloomsburg University Foundation Board of Directors and assists with alumni networks in the Harrisburg, Lancaster and Philadelphia areas. A co-host of a Harrisburg area Career Connections Reception, which introduced alumni to opportunities to mentor BU students or supervise internships, he has mentored students as a volunteer job shadowing host. Gillespie has been an alumni presenter during the fall conferences of BU’s Zeigler Institute for Professional Development and delivered the commencement address during the May 10 ceremony for graduates of the College of Business and College of Education.

As a student, Gillespie served as president of the Community Government Association. He was active with the Delta Mu Delta Honor Society for Business Administration, the Husky Ambassadors and the Men’s Rugby Football Club. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science in business administration/accounting.

At Hersha Hospitality Trust, a publicly traded real estate investment trust that owns and operates hotels in urban markets, Gillespie is responsible for the accounting, financial reporting, information technology and audit functions and leads Hersha’s risk management and compliance programs. He was recognized by the Central Penn Business Journal in 2011 as “CFO of the Year” in the growth specialist category and in 2012 as a recipient of the “Forty Under 40” award. Prior to joining Hersha, Gillespie was manager of financial policy and controls for Tyco Electronics Corp., and served as a senior manager with the “Big Four” firms of Arthur Andersen and KPMG.

He serves on the boards of The United Way of the Capital Region and The Foundation for Enhancing Communities and lives in Lancaster with his wife, Bree, and two children, Benjamin and Abigail.

Bloomsburg University invites its more than 63,000 living alumni to return to campus each spring for Alumni Weekend festivities, which this year will be held from May 16 to 18. The weekend includes the annual Alumni Awards Luncheon, the 50-year reunion for the class of 1964 and a reunion for graduates from the classes of 1930 to 59.
