Beat the Winter Blues at the Hazleton YMCA

The Greater Hazleton Y has a new program entitled, “The 18 Days on the Road to Sochi”; it runs until February 23rd. The object of this program three-fold:  Building support for Team USA as they follow their Olympic Dream; to encourage our member to seek and fulfill their own personal fitness goals and; we are supporting one of our employees, Bill Gerhard whose son, Chad, is currently in Sochi.  Chad is serving as Strength and Conditioning Coach for the U.S. Snowboard Halfpipe and U.S. Aerial teams, Chad is a hometown boy and Weatherly native.

Upon registration for our Sochi event, participants receive an Olympic medal tally sheet that we will add a sticker to for each “day” at the Y. Your workout routine must take place at the Hazleton YMCA/YWCA and can consist of work-outs in the wellness center, swimming pools, gymnasium, group exercise room, and racquetball court.

At the end of the “18 Days on the Road to Sochi” promotion, the Hazleton Y will award participants with a Certificate of Completion in either a Bronze, Silver or Gold medal status.  We hope to not only fulfill the Olympic spirit in all of us, but set up more permanent exercise goals for members.

The Hazleton YMCA is also celebrating “Bring-a –Friend Week”  any current member can bring in a friend to sample the amenities of a Y membership. The friend can partake in any/all activities at the Y for Free for the entire week.

Preschoolers are participating in a Junior Indoor Olympics held in conjunction with the 2- week Sochi Winter Olympics. Each day the students have a different event they compete in such as: Scooter races, flip flops, crabwalks etc. What makes these Olympics different is that they encourage fun, exercise, cooperation and everyone is a winner. The students are even designing their own Olympic Medals as part of their Arts and Crafts class. The winter weather has shortened their ability to play outdoors, at least for a little while, so these games offer them a new level of play.

Spring registration is underway. Classes for Spring I session will be held March 2nd to April 19th and Spring II classes run April 20th to June 14th. New class schedules are available on the information wall in the lobby.
