Safe Kids: Our Mission

To promote the prevention of childhood injuries in Pennsylvania through education, collaboration and advocacy.

How do we fulfill our mission?

  • We sponsor effective injury reduction activities targeted to regional needs across the Commonwealth.
  • We promote awareness and education among child injury prevention advocates.
  • We support public policies and programs that reduce injuries among children and youth.
  • We provide safety education to children and youth in the major risk areas of traffic safety, water safety, fire safety, poisoning and falls prevention.

Advisory Council

The Advisory Council is a committee of individuals from various organizations who assist in the development, funding, and strategic planning of Safe Kids Pennsylvania to enhance the mission of preventing injuries to children.

Safe Kids: Resources

Child Passenger Safety Reference Card

This 5?x7? card serves as a reference for proper child restraint use focusing on rear-facing seats, forward-facing seats, belt positioning booster seats and safety belts. Best practice guidelines are highlighted on the back in addition to Pennsylvania Child Passenger Safety Laws. This resource is also available in Spanish.

Gun Safety Rack Card

This resource provides tips for parents and caregivers on firearm safety. It also includes facts and statistics on firearms in relation to children.

Walk-This-Way Activity Book

An 8-page resource guide on pedestrian safety including information for parents and caregivers on pedestrian injuries and safety tips; also includes activity pages for children on being Walk Smart.


A coloring book geared to children in grades K-3 and contains safety messages for each letter of the alphabet.

Medication and Candy Lookalike Resources

(Available in English and Spanish)
Onesheets and display posters that showcase the similarities between medications and candys. The 8.5 x 11 in. handout shows the candy and medications side by side. The 16 x 20 in.poster is suitable for printing at a commercial printer and has an area where you can affix samples of candy and medications.

Baby I've Got My Eye on You

A 12-page booklet for parents of children from birth to age 5. The home safety guide contains prevention tips for all injury risks. A room by room survey of the home is also included. This guide is also available in Spanish.

Helmet Heads

A small card that can be used as a reminder for children and parents to always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle or other wheeled device. Printed with helmet fitting instructions on the face of the card. English on one side, Spanish on the other side.

PFD (Personal Flotation Device) Card

A small card that can be used as a reminder for children and parents to always wear a life vest when riding in a boat. Printed with safety tips on the face of the card.

Children Drown in Silence Rack Card

This guide provides water safety information on pools and open bodies of water; includes water safety tips. This card is also available in Spanish.

Toy Safety Rack Card

Toy safety tip card designed to help parents choose toys that will be safe for their children.

Space Detector Card

This small round card can be used to gauge the distance between crib slats, ballistors on a hand rail or any small area such as an open window, deck, balcony, or fence where a child's hand or body member can become caught or entangled or where they may possibly fall through.

Presenter Session Slides and Handouts of the PA Childhood Trauma and Injury Prevention Conference

This statewide conference presented on April 23-24, 2012 by the Pennsylvania Department of Health and Safe Kids Pennsylvania provided attendees with best practices in childhood injury prevention, innovative programs, and skills and strategies to enhance their outreach to families in their community. Workshop sessions focused on best practices related to motor vehicle safety, youth sport concussion management, walkable communities, home visitation, carbon monoxide safety and community paramedicine. In addition, skill-building sessions on using data for message development, advocacy, and injury prevention principles were offered.
